Teatr w Epidauros/Epidavros theatre

Teatr w Epidauros/Epidavros theatre

The big advantage of choosing Poros for a holiday stay is a possibility to visit the Continental part of Greece. In order to do that you need to take a ferry to Galatas and rent a car. I do not recommend renting cars in the chain rentals – like the one just opposite the port – they have fixed prices and request copy of a credit card and this is always alarming for me.

I do not recommend also traveling by bus. The connections are rare , if any…

We decided to visit Epidavros, one of the biggest theatres of the ancient times, preserved until today. We were very much surprised when we followed first signs to Epidavros and ended up on a rather small archaeological site at the seaside (on the pictures above). It appeared that there were 2 places called this way. Only thanks to my determination we visited the bigger ‘real’ Epidavros theatre as my husband was really disappointed and wished to give up after seeing this miniature:)

Hearing all this moans and groans was worth it as we finally visited the ‘real’ Epidavros theatre. You cannot overlook this place – crowds of tourists, infrastructure like crowded parking, post office, stands with fresh juices, Japanese tourists with sun umbrellas etc., do not allow for any delusions that it is a Greek ‘must see’.

The first impression which I had was not the size of the object but the temperature – it was colder than in the seaside or on the islands. The interior seems to be a better place for living in this climate.

What was also surprizing and will be remaining me about this place were people clapping their hands on the scene. They will not know anyway whether they can be heard in the last raw, will they?

W każdym razie dziękujemy, my słyszeliśmy Was doskonale:)
Anyway thanks, we heard you perfectly:)

Wypada jednak coś opowiedzieć o samym zabytku, najlepiej zachowanym teatrze starożytnej Grecji.
I should say a few words about the archaeological object, the best preserved Greek theatre.

The object is dated for 300 BC, could contain up to 14,000 visitors. I hope that the pictures show its size. I was on may archaeological sites (however blaze it may sound) but this one was really impressive, I think I could place it just after Athens (here) and before Lesvos aqueduct (here)

W pobliżu teatru znajdują się rozległe wykopaliska z charakterystycznymi ruinami wczesnochrześcijańskiej bazyliki.
Near the theatre there is a huge archaeological site with remains of Early Christian basilica.

For the same ticket you can also see the museum on the site.

If you happen to be nearby I think this place must be seen. Even if your interest in the Ancient Greece is equal to zero this theatre will surely be impressive.
