When on winter or autumn days I was searching through the guides, dreaming and planning next summer, I often found notes on petrified forest on Lesvos. Therefore when we were making decision this spring where to go on vacations, the petrified forest was one of the reasons why Lesvos appeared to be a dream destination.
For a long time I am interested in everything that is connected with volcanoes. I do not know whether my fascination was born when I visited Nissiros, about which you can read here (you can see it here) or maybe even earlier when I watched in my childhood a TV series about Pompeii:) Anyway, from this time I had the chance to see El Teide on Tenerife (you can read here)and some volcano remains on Kos (here you can see Kos volcano story) but my appetite is still growing! :)
The petrified forest was also created as a result of a explosion of volcano but there are two theories how it happened. Some of the scientist say that these are really petrified sequoias as a result of lava and thermal waters activities. Some just say that these are unusual rock formations, having nothing to do with trees.
And each of them sustains his theory, stubborn as a donkey:)
Najdłuższy pień ma 20 metrów długości i leży odkopany.
The longest trunk is 20 meters long and lies unearthed on the ground.
Teoria powstania lasu podzieliła nawet mnie z Jackiem:) Osobiście uważam, że to jednak drzewa-widać słoje i korzenie.
The theory of creation of this forest caused up discord even between me and Jacek:) I personally believe that these are trees – grains and roots are visible.
Jacek sądzi, że część obiektów to drzewa, część zaś formacje skalne.
Jacek thinks that some of the objects are trees some are rock formations.
Atrakcja są 7 metrowe stojące pnie sekwoi.
The biggest attractions are standing sequoia trunks being 7 meters high.
Skamieniały las ma 20 milionów lat!
The petrified forest is 20 millions years old!
According to Internet petrified forest on Lesvos is the biggest petrified forest all over the World.
Even if you are not planning to spend weekend in the petrified forest, have fun!:)

Interesting post. I would have thought that there was some scientific way of checking exactly what is what, but what do i know LOL.
Great photos. Have a good weekend Diane

Sounds myszical and so worth while seeing that petrified forest! Have a happy weekend Ola!
Poczułam trochę słońca dzięki Twoim zdjęciom :)
I have been in Lesvos MANY YEARS AGO!!
Your heart is always pounding for Greece...
Thank you for that!!!!!!
Pozdrawiam :)
How interesting!
Great post. I've always been intrigued with this place. Petrified forest... sounds very "fairy tale'ish". beautiful photos.
I've been to the petrified forest in California - so interesting.

Very interesting post, Ola! I think you and Jacek should discuss the matter at your favorite restaurant in Warsaw. :D Over...say... seafood? hehe. Santé!

Allison-I will report you about the results of this discussion soon:)
Fascinating place I must say and it seems such calm and peaceful there. Luv it!
absolutely interesting! I´ve been in Pompei too. Have you heard news about the sismo-volcanic troubles in El Hierro? (a Canarian Island)
kss
;-)
I've heard about it but not very precisly, I must search in internet
Nice stones, good photos too.
i have always wanted to travel to lesbos and now wish to even more so - i never heard there was such a forest in greece! thanks for this cool post, ola~
Have never heard of this place, but it's very mysterious. I like that you and Jacek are debating on the origin, Ola. :)
This is a very unusual trip. I can feel that the place is very spiritual.
Hi Ola,
I enjoyed reading your post and seeing all the interesting photos.
I have also had a fascination with watching on TV the history of the volcano of Pompeii.
Thanks for sharing and I hope you have a great week
Hugs
Carolyn
Amanda, go there if you wish to see an island practically with no turists-for me it was really nice!
Oh my. That is quite stunning! I have to agree, I think they are trees too. There are too many types, the tall one you stood next to, the wide one that looks like a stump of an ancient tree. I can see why they fascinate you!
Interesting post Ola. I've only seen pictures of the petrified forests.
Very interesting, I bet you have great time..
Great pictures. I remember visiting the petrified forest on Lesvos.
Wow, I have not seen so many of these fossified tree trunks before!
There's one in the Natural History Museum in London though. Just one. ;)
I read that many of them were actually taken away in 19th century to museums all around the world
The petrified forest on Lesvos is new to me. I've seen photos of fossilized trees in California, but have never been there.
Such amazing stones!!! I always wonder the nature and how poor we humans are while destructing it.... incredible pics, thanks for sharing!
This looks like such an interesting place to visit Ola. I've seen petrified trees in Arizona, in the American Southwest, but they were not as large as the ones in Levos.
Sounds lika an amazing trip and great time!
Take a look at my blog, and if you like it, follow me, I'll be waiting for you!
Wow, now this sounds and looks fascinating. It's hard to believe that something could be so old. Have a great day Ola, and time to get out the winter wear soon it's looking like for both of us unfortunately!
Powędrowałam sobie z wami po Lesbos .Piekna wycieczka. A jesli chodzi o fascynacje wulkaniczne to polecam Santorini :) . Pozdrawiam jesiennie :)
Darlin, I cannot really write that I am waiting for winter:)
Some amazing structures and fascinating countryside. I was always interested in the mysteriousness of Vesuvius and Pompeii too when I was younger.
Good pictures, I love that wonderful petrified forest, impressive.
Very interesting/fascinating. We love all kinds of rocks and trees and those ones really look unique. Would love to go there one day....
